Flattery is a subtle form of lying. It inflates the ego of whom it targets. Those who flatter hope to curry favour with the hearer. The flatterer thinks that she can outwit others and delude them with her hypocrisy. The moment you think you have succeeded in deceiving others with your smooth talk, you will get puffed up, setting yourself up for your downfall
