Devotion
God’s third commandment is “Honour thy parents”. Why was it instituted as the next most important commandment immediately after the first two commandments? This is because the parent-child relationship on earth is modelled after the Father-Son relation in heaven. The family is where fear and reverence is first cultivated. Children learn to respect their parents while parents learn to love their children in the same way God loves His children. This is the foundation on which the fear of God must be built upon.
