2 Kings 13:17-18
17 And he said, “Open the east window”; and he opened it. Then Elisha said, “Shoot”; and he shot. And he said, “The arrow of the Lord’s deliverance and the arrow of deliverance from Syria; for you must strike the Syrians at Aphek till you have destroyed them.”
18 Then he said, “Take the arrows”; so he took them. And he said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground”
As I quietened my heart to ponder over God’s direction for the new year of 2016, the well-known passage above was brought to mind. Immediately, I perceived within my spirit 2 emphatic decrees concerning this new year which come from the passage in 2 Kings 13.
Decree #1: Raise your Bow, Shoot the Arrow
The year 2016 is the year for the believer to boldly shoot the arrow of the Lord’s deliverance over his or her life! The arrow of deliverance represents God’s speedy and definite delivery that will come to the situations we face in our lives, no matter how impossible those situations seem. Yet we must be careful to aim the arrow in the right direction, else we will not see the true deliverance of God made manifest in our life. Notice how the hands of the prophet Elisha were deliberately placed on the hands of the king, and there was a specific direction to which the arrow was shot. In other words, while God has promised us redemption from the difficult situations we may encounter, we must be careful to align ourselves with the will of God, such that we will not unnecessarily embroil ourselves in difficult situations or battles that God had not desired for us to be in. So right now declare that the arrow of God’s deliverance has been shot over your life today!
Decree #2: Empty your quiver, strike the ground
Elisha did not merely ask the king to shoot the arrow; King Joash was also instructed to strike the ground with the remaining arrows. In the same vein, for us to see true victory in 2016 and for the arrow of God’s deliverance to hit its mark, God requires us to play our part! Many choose to cling onto the promise laid out in decree one and refuse to undertake the work required of them in decree two. Yet it is clear that the prophet’s instruction was two-fold- how then should we go about striking the ground? We must strike the ground through fervent prayer, diligent meditation and fearless confession; these are but three ways that we will birth the fruit of God’s deliverance over our situations in the coming year. And do not make the mistake that Joash made- instead choose to fully empty your quiver and whole-heartedly strike the ground until you see true redemption in your situation!
While I continued to meditate over this scripture, I was drawn to following verse and was made certain of the third decree for the year ahead
2 Kings 13:21b
19b and when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet.
Decree #3: Bury the bones, behold new life
There are some things that have been dead in your life- dead dreams, dead promises, dead relationships- that God want to resurrect in your life. However, I feel even more strongly that there are some things that have died in your life that God wants to stay dead- and in their place new life to a new thing will come forth. God has intentionally allowed some aspects of your life- be it a career, a hope, a friendship to wither because He has planned for something better to be revived in its place. What then is that new thing that God has planned for your life? Amongst other ways, you will know the new things that God has planned for you through one, being faithful to the current plans and purposes God has established for your life and two, by looking to past prophetic words that God has given you through men and women of God that you have carelessly neglected. Hold fast to those prophetic decrees while remaining faithful in your current portion because new life is about to spring forth!
Boldly proclaim these 3 decrees in your time of meditation throughout the course of this year! Believe God that He is, and His Word will be true for you in this new season!
