01/1998
The Season of Unveiling

Genesis 13 is a figurative picture of a vital prophetic insight concerning the year 1998. It is a year of making the right choice in life. It will have a significant bearing on our future course. (Dt 30:19) This was the thought quickened and impressed upon my soul in October 1997. At this juncture (Genesis 13), Abraham received his first broad revelation of his inheritance - the promise land. Likewise, in this coming year many servants of God shall see their ministries and churches establish on a firm foundation. This is the year of Jubilee for the release and the harvest of God's goodness. This is the year of the enlarging of the "coasts" of ministries and churches (1 Chron. 4: 10). On the contrary, as Lot soon lost his wealth and properties so likewise the careless mistakes of many shall be their downfall or missed blessed portions in life.

Lot chose for himself the plains of Jordan around the defiled territories of Sodom and Gomorrah. Sodom in the Hebrew CEDOM means to scorch or bum. Literally, a place of "burning" lust. Gomorrah in the Hebrew, Amorah means a heap of ruins. Literally, it is a figurative picture of a person being devastated and wasted by his sinful lifestyle. In a spiritual sense, Lot chose death for Sodom and Gomorrah presently is part of the dead sea. In other words, Lot made a wrong and costly choice in life.

The graphic picture of Sodom and Gomorrah are portrayed in Gen 14:2: "....Bera, the king of Sodom, and with Birsha, the king of Gomorrah .... and the king of Bela, which is Zoar." Bera in Hebrew means sons of evil so Sodom represented vicious, vile evil. Birsha in Hebrew means wickedness. Hence, the conditions of immorality were terribly evil and wicked. In the spiritual realm, it signifies these areas were energised and controlled by the power of darkness. For the word 'king' represented a territorial spirit. The word Bela in the Hebrew means destruction, devoured or swallowed up. A figurative picture of a devourer awaits the Lot's disaster. (1 Pet 5:8) He did not discern the movements of the enemy for he considered them insignificant to do him any harm. For Zoar in the Hebrew means little; small and insignificant.

Why did Lot make a wrong choice in life? Firstly, he never bother to consult God for guidance. Like other worldly Christians, Lot set little value on fellowshipping with God (no altar). Lot's mind was set on earthly riches and not on heavenly things. He preferred to walk by sight rather than by faith. He was a selfish man who never spare a thought for his uncle. By the right of seniority, Abram could have the first and best choice. Lot saw the well-watered area near the Jordan River and claimed all of the best land for himself.

Lot's confidence was in what he could perceive through the eye-gate, evidently not realizing that this is the main avenue through which temptation assails the soul. (1 Jn 2:16) Lot looked for the best the world could offer and made that his choice. What are you looking at today? Watching the wrong television programmes could open an avenue for temptation to assail and pollute the soul. Many believers failed to obey the call of God upon their life because their worldly eyes are upon what the best of the world could offer them. This is one of the chief causes why man fails to respond to the call of God upon his life. A literal paraphrase of Matt 20:16 would be many are called but few choose that calling.

God does not see as man sees. The worldly eye of Lot saw the well-watered plain as luxuriant as the Garden of Eden, but the holy eye of God saw something else. This was what the Lord saw: "But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the Lord. " (Gen 13:13) It always pays to seek the Lord's will and trust Him when choosing a direction for life. Lot failed to see the good land for his taste and living has been polluted and spotted by the worldliness of Egypt. (Gen 12:10)

Wrong choices in life seem to reflect the unrenewed mind. A renewed person is known by his behaviour namely what he flees or pursue after in life. "Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart." (2 Tim 2:22) Lot did not flee from the sinful and immoral environment of Sodom. The scripture plainly indicate the progressive downward degradation of Lot: " Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain"; he "pitched his tent even as far as Sodom" (v.12) he "dwelt in Sodom" ( 14:12) and finally, " Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom." (19:1)

In ancient times, people who sat at the gate represent the position of great authority. (Dt 21:19) Lot became one of the city counsellors and his daughters married Sodomites. He was appointed as an official in a wicked city. Though Lot was a just and righteous man as depicted in 2 Pet 2:7,8, but he was gradually influenced by his appetite for the things of the world. Eventually, Lot's moral values sunk to an all-time low, he would rather give up the welfare and safety of his own daughters to the lustful Sodomites in exchange for the protection of the two men [angels] in his home. (Gen 19:7, 8) His tolerance and compromise of sin has caused such depravity and callousness in his moral character.

What is the ultimate result of making the wrong choices in life? Lot suffered great losses including his dear wife's life. The summation of the prophetic insights: many will be veiled from seeing the true blessings in life. Lot's name in the Hebrew means a veil or covering. Lot lost his sense of discernment to choose the right things in life. In a spiritual sense, many will be veiled from seeing the right opportunity to step into the fullness of their callings or potential in Christ. We need God to anoint our eyes with eye salve that we may see. ( Rev 3:18) O Lord, guide us along the way with Your eye. (Ps 32:8) This year, may our eyes be single in keeping our perspective right before the Lord.
